Uranium Statistics
Australia has two uranium mines: Ranger in NT owned by ERA and
Olympic Dam in SA owned by WMC. (A third is due to open in Oct 2000, run
by Heathgate Resources in SA.) In 1999-2000 they produced 8199 tonnes of
U3O8 (6952 tU), equivalent to 3476 PJ.
World uranium consumption is about 72,000 tonnes
U3O8 (61,000 tU) per year, in over 430 reactors
which in 1999 generated 2400 billion kWh of electricity (16% of world
total), in 32 countries. This avoided the emission of about 2300 million
tones of CO2, relative to coal.
Australia has one research reactor of 10 MW thermal at Lucas Heights
and this is due to be replaced by a more modern one double the size in
2005.
